Description: |
These intensives are designed for those interested in more extensive exposure and training in the integrated model developed by Dr. Neufeld, including those who would like to become practitioners of this paradigm, whether as parent consultants, parent coaches, or in the school system. The first level intensive provides a grounding in the conceptual foundations of the approach and is entitled Making Sense of Kids (or Working with Stuck Kids). The second level builds on this foundation with a focus on challenging problems and troubling behaviour. The title of this intensive is Challenging Childhood Problems. The first level serves as a prerequisite to the second level as well as to the certification and internship programs. |

Description: |
Teaching doesn't always result in learning and this discrepancy seems to be widening. The primary reason for this involves the psychological factors in the learning equation. Despite advances in curriculum, technology and pedagogy, the teachability of children is on the wane, making teaching much more difficult than it used to be or than it needs to be. Although the teachability of a student is the single most important factor in learning, this variable is rarely addressed. Dr. Neufeld teases apart this factor to reveal the impact of attachment, immaturity and vulnerability in facilitating or impeding the learning process. In so doing, he exposes common roots to both learning and behaviour. He also provides practical suggestions for how to improve the teachability of students and thus increase ones effectiveness as a teacher.
This material can be introduced in a one-day seminar but requires 2 to 3 days to do the material justice and to satisfy teachers' demands for practical suggestions. The best exposure to this material is in the week intensive for educators. When this week intensive is taken through Malaspina Unversity College of BC, participants can receive postgraduate credit. The focus of this material can range from the most troubled to the most gifted, and from alternate settings to mainstream education.

Description: |
Although the counterwill impulse - that instinct that gives rise to resistance and oppositionality in children - is quite normal and even healthy in certain circumstances, its manifestations and impact can be highly disruptive. This basic human reaction is undoubtedly one of the most troublesome, misunderstood and misdiagnosed dynamics in childhood. Making sense of counterwill is the key to opening the doors for change. Dr. Neufeld presents a three-pronged approach for prevention and intervention. This one-day course is highly relevant to variety of audiences: parents of children of any age, educators from preschool to high school, professionals working with delinquent youth, or adults involved with children with severe behaviour problems. |

Description: |
Once we understand how bullies are made, our attempts to unmake them can be truly effective and long-lasting. Most prevailing approaches to this problem assume that bullying is either learned behaviour or the result of failure to acquire social skills. In contrast, Dr. Neufeld dissects the bully syndrome to reveal its deep instinctive roots in the dynamics of attachment and vulnerability. This material is usually presented in a one-day format. |

Description: |
We put a high premium on social responsibility in our children but often lack an understanding of how best to develop this ethos. The direct approach, though appealing in its simplicity, rarely works with the most troublesome students. Dr. Neufeld presents a developmental approach to social responsibility that not only reveals its roots but sets the stage for practical and fruitful interventions. Dr. Neufeld developed this course primarily for educators working within an elementary or middle school setting. |
