Application deadline: November 1, 2007.
Description
This program is designed to equip, authorize and support facilitation of Dr. Neufeld's video-courses. This 11 month certification program consists of online courses and online support as well as an onsite conference in Vancouver, B.C. Individuals accepted into the certification program will be expected to facilitate at least two Power to Parent video-courses while receiving ongoing support. After certification, facilitators are listed on Dr. Neufeld's website and authorized to use Dr. Neufeld's promotional materials. For a nominal annual listing fee, certified facilitators can post the courses they are facilitating on Dr. Neufeld's website, have continued access to online support from fellow facilitators and experienced mentors, and enjoy continued access to resource materials (e.g., recordings, videos, case studies).
Potential Candidates
Space in the certification program is limited. We are interested in individuals with good leadership skills, a love of children, social sensitivity, a professional demeanor, and a passion for the paradigm taught by Dr. Neufeld. Preference will be given to those applicants with parenting experience.
Prerequisite: Neufeld Intensive Level One
A professional degree is not required but an understanding of the developmental paradigm is, as well as a desire to forward this paradigm through parent education. Towards this end, candidates are required to complete Dr. Neufeld's Intensive which provides the conceptual foundations of Dr. Neufeld's approach, including a working knowledge of the dynamics of attachment, maturation and vulnerability. These conceptual keys are essential to understanding and interpreting the video-course material as well as creating the theoretical context in which to lead discussion, handle questions and address parenting concerns. See the calendar for upcoming options for taking the course live. This Intensive is also available in a home-study format. Consult the home-study page for more information.
Program
Facilitator support
Certification candidates will have access to support and guidance from individuals who have received in-depth exposure to Dr. Neufeld's approach. The support will be provided through individual mentoring as well as an online Facilitator's Forum. In addition, candidates for certification will have access to resource materials not available to the public.
Annual Facilitators Conference
All candidates are expected to participate in an annual facilitators conference held in Vancouver in the beginning of February. The conference will be recorded for those unable to attend. The conference will include presentations by Dr. Neufeld as well as seminars by experienced facilitators who have studied personally with Dr. Neufeld.
Online discussion of the Power to Parent material
One of the primary equipping processes we are hoping to incorporate in the new year involves an eight week online discussion group via video conferencing technology. Each online group will consist of four or more candidates with discussion facilitated by a mentor in the program. After individually viewing a session in the Power to Parent video-course, the online group will meet to discuss the material covered in that session. Groups will be scheduled to accommodate candidates work and family commitments.
Periodic sessions of online Q&A with Dr. Neufeld
These online sessions will be facilitated in real time (9am - 12noon PT, Saturdays). Participants will be able to view and hear the presenter live through their computer and interact via voice or keyboard. These sessions require a computer with microphone (built-in or plugged in) and internet access. For certification purposes, participation in at least two sessions of online Q & A will be required. At least three or four of these sessions will be scheduled throughout the calendar year.
Additional exposure to Dr. Neufeld's teaching
Certification candidates will be provided a list of foundational and core materials to study. Candidates are also encouraged to take advantage of the recordings of Dr. Neufeld's seminars and courses made available to them as part of the certification process. The Intensive Level Two, although not mandatory for video-course facilitators, applies the paradigm to common childhood problems and is highly recommended.
Practicums
Candidates will be expected to facilitate at least two Power to Parent video-courses during the certification program, one in the Spring term and the other in the Fall. The first practicum experience may be informally arranged (if preferred) with a small group of friends and acquaintances. The final practicum should be more formally arranged
Certification Process
Certification is not automatic. To complete certification, candidates will be asked to demonstrate their working knowledge of the paradigm by submitting a number of questions they have received from the participants of the video-courses together with their answers to these questions. Candidates may also be asked to respond to additional questions. Part of the certification process involves having the video-course participants fill out and submit evaluation forms to Dr. Neufeld's office. Once all components of the program have been successfully completed, including the receipt of positive evaluations, certification will be granted.
Suggested readings and recordings
A library of reference material is being developed for use by the facilitators.
Technical Requirements:
This is an online program. Most of the learning, interaction and support is done through an online site and through state-of-the-art online video conferencing. Candidates must demonstrate a certain degree of technical competence (or at least willinginess to become technically competent) in order to fully participate in the facilitator program. Program participants require the use of a computer with high-speed internet connection, a webcam and a headphone/microphone set. No special software installation is required but participants must be able to navigate the internet using a website browser, possess basic word processing software and skills, and be able to communicate through email. Orientation will be provided for the online site and the programs used, but general computer skills will be up to the participants to acquire as needed.
Tuition
The tuition fee for the 11 month certification program is $1450 CAD. The payment may be divided into two installments, the first payable at registration and the second by April 1, 2007.
Application & Registration Process
Applications need to be submitted by November 1, 2007 for entry into the program in January. Spaces are limited in the program in order to preserve the quality of the experience. As part of the first step of application process you will be asked to provide a letter of intent, references, a picture in jpeg format and short bio for use in the brochures, and a tentative plan for your two practicums (including where, when and for whom). Upon successful completion of the first step, an interview will be arranged during the month of November. The interview will be done through online video conferencing and so will require access to a computer with a camcorder and highspeed internet connection. Those accepted will be invited to register for the program. Applicants will be notified by December 1, 2007 and the deadline for registration is January 7th, 2008.
